Thai tradition. A personal approach.

Nuad Thai, also known as Nuad Bo-Rarn, is performed on a floor mat, through comfortable clothing and without oils. Palm and thumb pressure and assisted stretches follow Sen Sib — the ten principal energy lines according to Thai tradition. Pressure and range of movement are adapted to you. No prior flexibility is needed; Thai Balance provides traditional clothing for your session.

Why is traditional Thai massage practised on a mat?

Traditional Thai massage is practised on a purpose-made mat, providing a stable, comfortable base for working with the whole body.

Compared with a massage table, the mat allows greater freedom of movement, a wider range of assisted stretches and gentle joint mobilisation.

The practitioner uses their own body weight in a controlled way to apply precise, rhythmic pressure.

The massage takes place through comfortable clothing, without oils, with the intensity adapted to each client’s needs.

Sen Sib – the ten energy lines

Traditional Thai massage is rooted in the concept of Sen Sib – ten principal energy lines described in Thai tradition.

They provide a framework for applying rhythmic pressure, assisted stretches and joint mobilisation.

Working with Sen Sib is part of the philosophy of Nuad Thai, combining a considered sequence, attentive practice and an individual approach.

Sen Sib is a traditional framework for working with the body, rather than scientifically established anatomical structures.

A tradition passed down through generations

Nuad Thai developed within Thailand’s local communities, with knowledge passed from teacher to student.

Wat Pho temple in Bangkok has helped preserve this knowledge through inscriptions on traditional Thai medicine and massage. Today, specialist schools continue this lineage.

In 2019, Nuad Thai — traditional Thai massage — was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
